Fibre preparation
Paper fibre is mixed with water to create a workable pulp slurry. Ecology Pac uses recycled paper waste as its primary fibre source.
A practical guide to moulded pulp, paper pulp and moulded fibre packaging: terminology, manufacturing, applications, design limits and the information buyers need before requesting a custom pack.
Moulded pulp packaging is three-dimensional packaging formed from a water-based fibre pulp on shaped moulds, then dewatered and dried or pressed. The same broad category is often called moulded fibre packaging, paper pulp packaging, molded pulp or molded fiber. Typical products include trays, protective inserts, shoe trees, bottle cradles, egg packs and cup carriers.
On this pageIn packaging, these names are commonly used for the same broad family of formed fibre parts. British English usually uses moulded pulp or moulded fibre; US searchers often type molded pulp or molded fiber. Buyers also use phrases such as paper pulp packaging, paper pulp trays, pulp packaging and fibre inserts.
The wording does not by itself define the exact fibre recipe, surface finish, wall thickness or forming process. Those details should be discussed against the product and the performance required from the pack.
Paper fibre is mixed with water to create a workable pulp slurry. Ecology Pac uses recycled paper waste as its primary fibre source.
The fibre slurry is drawn onto a shaped screen mould so the wet fibre follows the required three-dimensional geometry.
Water is removed and the formed part is dried or pressed according to the product and production method.
The part is checked for the attributes that matter to the application, such as fit, dimensions, moulded definition, cleanliness and pack compatibility.
For a custom project, the manufacturing process starts with the product geometry and packing objective. A visually attractive tray is not enough if it does not load efficiently, fit the outer carton or support the product in the right areas.
Moulded fibre can be formed around many product categories. Ecology Pac's current range includes paper pulp shoe trees and shoe inserts, bottle packaging, electronics and appliance inserts, automotive protective packaging, health and beauty inserts, egg packaging, fruit trays, fresh-produce trays, cup holders and other custom moulded pulp packaging.
The same material family can serve very different jobs: locating a product, separating surfaces, supporting shape, organising the pack, protecting selected contact points or improving presentation. The geometry has to be designed for the actual task.
No. Paper packaging is a much broader category that can include corrugated boxes, folding cartons, paper bags, labels, wraps and paperboard components. Moulded paper pulp packaging is a three-dimensional formed fibre product: trays, cradles, inserts, end caps, shoe trees and similar shaped parts.
Ecology Pac specialises in moulded pulp / moulded fibre packaging. This distinction matters when a buyer searches for a supplier: a company that manufactures cartons or paper bags is not automatically a moulded pulp manufacturer, and a moulded pulp plant may not manufacture every type of paper packaging.
Dimensions, weight, vulnerable areas and surfaces that can or cannot carry load.
Outer carton, orientation, stacking, accessories and packing-line handling.
Handling, vibration, drops, compression, storage and destination conditions that matter to the project.
Expected requirement, tooling, sampling, production planning, shipping and any buyer-specific testing.
Recyclability and end-of-life claims should also be considered against the complete pack construction, coatings or additives, contamination and the recycling infrastructure available in the destination market.
Moulded pulp should not be treated as an automatic substitute for every plastic or foam component. Very high shock requirements, repeated-impact cushioning, exposure to demanding moisture conditions, extreme surface-finish expectations or very low and unstable volumes can change the material and commercial decision. The complete pack should be evaluated rather than comparing materials in isolation.
For foam-replacement projects, see the buyer comparison: moulded pulp vs EPS / thermocol.

Moulded pulp packaging is three-dimensional packaging formed from a water-based fibre pulp on shaped moulds, then dewatered and dried or pressed. It is commonly used for trays, inserts, shoe trees, cup carriers and protective product packaging.
The terms are often used for the same broad family of formed fibre packaging. Buyers may also use molded pulp, molded fiber, paper pulp trays or pulp packaging. Exact material and process specifications can still differ by product.
No. Paper packaging is a broad category that can include corrugated boxes, cartons, bags and labels. Moulded paper pulp packaging refers specifically to three-dimensional fibre parts formed from pulp, such as trays and protective inserts.
It can be a fibre-based alternative in suitable applications, but the pack should be designed and evaluated around the actual product, handling route and protection requirement rather than treated as an automatic one-for-one material swap.
Useful inputs include product dimensions or drawings, unit weight, vulnerable areas, current packaging, carton configuration, destination market, expected requirement and any testing or presentation requirements.
